Only a few years ago, home theaters consisted of large tube-based TVs,
VCRs, and stereos with two speakers. Today, home theaters consist of
flat-panel HDTVs, receivers, surround sound speakers, DVD players,
and more. So what components will make up the home theater of tomorrow?
Audio, video, and data distribution will be key to any future home
theater, which will soon morph into a home theater network.
Today's home theater is limited to a single room. For
example, a show recorded on a DVR can only be viewed
on the TV to which the DVR is connected; music heard
from the speakers of a home theater can only be heard
in the room in which the speakers are placed. However,
by establishing a home theater network, owners expand
the capabilities of their home theater by creating a
system capable of sending a recorded TV show to any bedroom,
or playing music on speakers throughout the property.
The equipment needed to change a home theater into a
home theater network includes a router, receiver, and
a home theater PC (HTPC). The router distributes data
and allows Ethernet-capable devices in a home theater
to connect to the Internet and a home network. The receiver
distributes audio and video from a home theater to multiple
rooms. Note, the simple 5.1 surround sound receivers
of today are not capable of this function. Newer receivers
with multiple-zone outputs will be necessary for a home
theater network. Finally, the HTPC functions as a source
for audio, video, and data. For example, the HTPC can
be used as a central server where an owner can save all
of his music, video, pictures, and data. An HTPC also
has the ability to serve as a DVR, and record TV shows.
Since the HTPC is a computer, its capabilities are essentially
endless.
As prices drop, more people are trading in their large,
tube-based TVs and stereos for thin, high-definition
TVs and multi-zone output receivers. Also, more people
are building home networks with their laptops and multiple
computers. The merging of the home theater and home network
into a home theater network will arrive in the not-too-distant
future. Your first home theater network lies just around
the corner.

Science
Fiction Movies
by Greg Culver
Science fiction movies have been around since the early days of film
and have traditionally explored a wide range of subjects and themes,
including several that are uniquely their own. There's nothing like
a good science fiction movie to make your eyes widen with awe or make
your hairs stand on end. Beyond these thrills, science fiction has
also been used to explore sensitive social and political themes and
issues. Today's trend in science fiction puts a premium on special
effects, especially considering the cutting-edge technology we have
today that can make even the most bizarre scenes seem realistic, such
as alien life forms, spectacular battles in outer space, time travel
or traveling to other worlds at the speed of light, and the like.
It's hard to define precisely what makes a science fiction
film because the genre has no universally accepted definition.
In fact, science fiction may vary from viewer to viewer
in that what is sci-fi to me may be fantasy or horror
to you. One thing though is that science fiction films
are purely speculative in nature and are peppered with
recurring themes involving science and technology. Other
prevalent themes in sci-fi movies are mysticism, magic,
the occult and the supernatural, which are also key elements
of fantasy or occult/religious movies. In fact, quite
a number of films blur the line between these genre,
such as Forbidden Planet, Chronicles of Riddick, and
the Star Wars series.
Through the years, the special effects in science fiction
movies have ranged from the downright horrible and laughable
to those that are awe-inspiring and breath-taking. Some
of the great milestones in this regard are marked by
films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Star Wars films,
Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Matrix.
These days, if you've missed any of the great sci-fi
movies, you can always catch them on DVD, which has a
wide array of selections dating back to the early days
of science fiction. There's nothing like going on a sci-fi
binge and watching movie after movie on DVD.
Science fiction DVDs are readily available in superstores
like Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as in your
local DVD shop. Keep your eyes open for a bargain or
two. You may even want to order your DVDs online at sites
like Amazon.com or Ebay for greater convenience.

Top
5 Movies Ever (In My Opinion)
1. Citizen Kane
In his mansion house in the middle of his sprawling
Florida estate, newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane
utters 'Rosebud', his last word before dying. No one
has the first clue as to the meaning of the word and
so reporter, Jerry Thompson, is assigned the task of
finding out the meaning of the word. Thompson interviews
Foster's friends, family and work colleagues to discover
the truth.
2. The Godfather
Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Oscar
winner Marlon Brando as the patriarch of the Corleone
family. Coppola paints a chilling portrait of a Sicilian
family's rise and near fall from power in America, and
the passage of rites from father to son. He masterfully
balances the story between family life and the ugly business
of crime in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's
best-selling novel, this graphic and brilliant film garnered
the Oscar for Best Picture in 1972.
3. The Shawshank Redemption
City Banker Andy Dufresne is in Shawshank State Prison
after receiving a double life sentence for murder. There
he meets Red and also forms friendships with the warden
and prison guards. Andy soon finds that you either get
on with living or you get on with dying.
4. Schindler's List
The war finds businessman Oskar Schindler joining the
Nazi party to make a profit. His dedication to the cause
and his generous bribes see him rewarded with an enamelware
plant in Krakow, whose employees are unpaid Jews. As
time goes by the atrocities overwhelm Schindler, who
is determined to protect his workers at all costs. Adapted
from the novel by Thomas Keneally. Academy Award: Best
Picture 1993.
5. Casablanca
Casablanca: easy to enter, but much harder to leave,
especially if your name is on the Nazi's most wanted
list. Atop that list is Czech Resistance leader Victor
Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope is Rick Blaine
(Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who sticks his
neck out for no one…especially Victor's wife Ilsa
(Ingrid Bergman), the ex-lover who broke his heart. So
when Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's safe
transport out of the country, the bitter Rick must decide
what's more important - his own happiness or the countless
lives that hang in the balance.http://www.thedvdandbookcompany.com/About
